How to Replace the Serpentine Belt on a 2000 4.7 V8 Toyota Tundra

Introduction

The serpentine belt on a 2000 4.7 V8 Toyota Tundra is responsible for driving several important accessories, including the power steering pump, alternator, and air conditioning compressor. If the serpentine belt fails, it can cause these accessories to stop working, which can lead to serious problems. Fortunately, replacing the serpentine belt is a relatively simple and inexpensive procedure that can be completed in about an hour.

Difficulty Level:

* Easy

Tools and Materials Needed:

* New serpentine belt * 1/2-inch drive ratchet * 15mm socket * Breaker bar (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Locate the serpentine belt tensioner. The serpentine belt tensioner is located on the front of the engine, near the top. It is a black, spring-loaded pulley that has a 15mm bolt in the center.
  2. Release the tension on the serpentine belt. Using the 1/2-inch drive ratchet and the 15mm socket, loosen the bolt in the center of the serpentine belt tensioner. As you loosen the bolt, the tensioner will slowly release the tension on the serpentine belt.
  3. Remove the old serpentine belt. Once the tension is released, slip the old serpentine belt off of the pulleys. Be careful not to drop the bolt into the engine compartment.
  4. Install the new serpentine belt. Route the new serpentine belt around the pulleys in the same way that the old belt was routed. Start by slipping the belt over the crankshaft pulley, then route it around the other pulleys in a clockwise direction.
  5. Tighten the serpentine belt. Once the new serpentine belt is in place, tighten the bolt in the center of the serpentine belt tensioner. Be sure to tighten the bolt securely, but do not overtighten it.
  6. Check the tension on the serpentine belt. Use your finger to press on the serpentine belt between two of the pulleys. The belt should have about 1/2-inch of deflection. If the belt is too loose, it will slip and squeal. If the belt is too tight, it will put unnecessary stress on the pulleys and bearings.

Tips:

* If you have a breaker bar, you can use it to help loosen the bolt in the center of the serpentine belt tensioner. * Be sure to check the tension on the serpentine belt after you have tightened it. * If you are not comfortable replacing the serpentine belt yourself, you can have it done by a mechanic.
